Usborne Books
The Book Store That
Comes to You
And Makes Learning FUN!
Oh the joys of getting name recognition for a business! Usborne Books at Home is almost 50 yrs old, but we are still working to get name recognition.
It has recently come to my attention, through phone calls from people looking for a store-front book store, that my company is now listed on several local listings as a book store, despite being a home-based business like Tupperware and Pampered Chef.
So, I’d like to take just a few minutes to help educate you, and maybe make a few steps forward in the name recognition arena.
Let me start by telling you who I am:

Who / What Usborne Is:
Usborne (all one word, with the ‘U’ being the only uppercase letter) is the leading publisher of non-fiction educational children’s books. We are not the Osbornes, or the US Bornes, or the US Bournes, whoever each of these might be.
Proper Pronunciation of our name:
Uz-born (the ‘u’ makes the same sound as in “up”)
Another Name Used for Usborne Books:
EDC - Educational Development Corporation - the United States division of Usborne, headquartered in Tulsa, OK
History of Usborne:
Usborne Books at Home was started almost 50 years ago in England by Peter Usborne, who was concerned that children were watching too much television, and spending too much time with non-educational gadgets like Nintendo.
Peter set out to provide an educational line of books which would grab the attention of the reader, and make a fun way of learning. Peter began looking at what drew children to Nintendo and TV, then began incorporating many of those aspects into books.
Peter Usborne was the very first author of Usborne Books at Home.
Usborne Books were introduced to the United States approximately 30 years ago, but did not begin to catch on until about 15 years ago.
Usborne is a world-wide market company, with divisions in the United States, Canada, England, and several other European countries.
Usborne’s Mission:
“The future of our world depends on the education of our children. EDC delivers educational excellence one book at a time. We provide economic opportunity while fostering strong family values. We touch the lives of children for a lifetime.”
Unique Features of the Usborne Product:
- The find the Duck feature in so many books works on simple problem solving.
- Text is in bite-sized, digestible chunks.
- More headings, helping to categorize information better.
- Illustrations are right next to the information being presented. Straightforward text is consistently positioned below each picture simplifying the reading experience.
- The content is presented in a fun way, never boring, so readers have the self-motivation to read.
- Usborne Books include interactivity – from slot, flap and sticker books for the younger kids to the Activities and How to books, like Origami and Paper Engineering to reinforce math skills.
- Usborne Books have clear step-by-step directions using illustrations or pictures as well as simple text written in short sentences.
- There are questions and real life examples to keep your child involved and interested enough to share with an adult, deepening the parent/child relationship.
- Usborne books are printed on acid-free paper

Companies that carry or have carried Usborne Books:
- Chick-fil-A - has carried a few Usborne Books in their Kids Meals
- Scholastic Books - Scholastic is a type of umbrella company over the United Stated division of Usborne. Because of this, Scholastic has a contract with Usborne to take a handful of Usborne’s over 1300 titles, print them on lesser quality paper, and sell them in their book fairs. This makes good advertising for Usborne, and helps us move forward in the name recognition arena.
